German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 bar German chocolate
  • 4 eggs separated
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions
 

  • Whip egg whites and set aside. Dissolve chocolate bar in boiling water and set
  • aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten egg yolks and beat well. Add
  • 3/4 cup milk alternately with flour. Add soda with 1/4 cup remaining milk, add
  • to batter and mix well. Add vanilla and chocolate. Fold in egg whites (vertical
  • motion). Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees in 3 greased and floured cake
  • pans.

ICING:

  • 1 tall can evaporated milk
  • 3 egg yolks, beaten
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 package chopped nuts (1/2 cup)
  • 1 cup coconut (or 1 can)
  • Mix milk, egg yolks, margarine and sugar in saucepan. Cook over medium heat,
  • stirring constantly until thick. (about 10 minutes) Cook and add remaining in-
  • gredients. Spread on cake.
