German Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
 - 2 cups sugar
 - 1 cup buttermilk
 - 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
 - 1/2 cup boiling water
 - 1 bar German chocolate
 - 4 eggs separated
 - 1 teaspoon soda
 - 1 teaspoon vanilla
 
Instructions
- Whip egg whites and set aside. Dissolve chocolate bar in boiling water and set
 - aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten egg yolks and beat well. Add
 - 3/4 cup milk alternately with flour. Add soda with 1/4 cup remaining milk, add
 - to batter and mix well. Add vanilla and chocolate. Fold in egg whites (vertical
 - motion). Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees in 3 greased and floured cake
 - pans.
 
ICING:
- 1 tall can evaporated milk
 - 3 egg yolks, beaten
 - 1/2 cup margarine
 - 1 cup sugar
 - 1 teaspoon vanilla
 - 1 package chopped nuts (1/2 cup)
 - 1 cup coconut (or 1 can)
 - Mix milk, egg yolks, margarine and sugar in saucepan. Cook over medium heat,
 - stirring constantly until thick. (about 10 minutes) Cook and add remaining in-
 - gredients. Spread on cake.
